Meigs County obtained its territory from
Athens & Gallia counties in 1819. The county seat is Pomeroy. It is named for Return J. Meigs, Jr., the 4th Governor of Ohio.

Langsville, Lebanon Township, Letart Falls, Letart Township, Long Bottom, Middleport, Minersville,
New Haven, Olive Township, Orange Township, Pageville, Pomeroy, Portland, Racine,
Reedsville, Rock Springs, Rutland, Rutland Township, Salem Center, Salem
Township, Salisbury Township, Saxon, Scipio Township, Sumner, Sutton Township, Syracuse,
& Wilkesville.
*Meigs County, Ohio, situated in the south east part
of the state, bounded east by Ohio river, and contains 425 square miles. Watered by Shade and
Leading creeks. Organized in 1819. Capital, Chester. There were in 1840, neat cattle 9,747,
sheep 16,860, swine 12,427; wheat 93,595 bushels produced, Indian corn 193,327, oats 72,059,
potatoes 34,903; 35 stores, capital $44,350; 1 fulling mill, 9 tanneries, 1 distillery, 2
flouring mills, 21 grist mills, 39 saw mills. Capital in manufactures $106,720. 82 schools
2,601 scholars. Population: 11,452.
